GFP holds a week-end Leadership Workshop at Miranda College
In its pursuit to start a discourse about leadership among youngsters, the Gandhi Fellowship Programme organised a week-end workshop at the Miranda House College in New Delhi on September 23-24. About 50 final year students from various colleges in the capital took part.

Through a host of games, lectures and interactive and introspective sessions, the students were exposed to various aspects of leadership. Ujwal Thakar, CEO, GiveIndia.org, began the proceedings with an introductory lecture on the growth and scope of the social sector in India.
In a stirring interactive session with the students, Aditya Natraj, founder of the Kaivalya Education Foundation, dispelled a lot of prevailing notions about the idea of leadership.
Citing Varghese Kurien (the Milkman of India) and E Sridharan (the Metro rail man) as the leading examples, Aditya stressed that change is possible despite systemic odds. Saying it was pointless to keep ranting and raving about the ailing systems, Aditya urged the participants to become the change they wanted to see in the world.
Vivek Sharma, director, GFP, dared the participants to think and act differently. “Become tomorrow’s leaders rather than mere managers,” he said.
During an intense 3-hour session with the students on the second day, Professor Niharika Vohra, IIM, Ahmedabad, deconstructed the conventional ideas about leadership. “Leadership is not one-upmanship, it is teamwork; it is not about rhetoric, it’s about listening,” she said. Taking rope and ‘marble pipe’ games played by the participants as metaphors, Professor Niharika presented an alternative and simplistic theory of leadership.
Rinchen, a final year (political science) student from Miranda, emerged a bit disoriented from the workshop. She aspires to return to her native place Leh and work at the grass roots. “But my parents want me to become an IAS officer. I am not sure, but I think my personal beliefs have been strengthened.”
Khushi, another final year (Political Science) student from Miranda, said the workshop has given her an entirely new perspective about what it takes to be a leader.
The next Leadership 2.0 Workshop will be held on the IIT, New Delhi campus in mid-October.
